Lake Harbor Beach Cleanup 2017

6/12/2017

Thank you to the volunteers who attended the June Lake Harbor Park Beach Cleanup Event!  Volunteers from Norton Shores Police Department, Schneider Risk Management, and Blue Horizons Wellness  joined local residents to gather trash, clear paths, and make our park ready for our community to use this summer.
Picture
Approximately 915 pieces of trash were collected.  Some of this high count was due broken beer bottles found by some volunteers and of course the numerous plastic and foam pieces found scattered around the park.   Total Weight was about 31 pounds, but considering that much the trash was foam, plastic, paper, and other light stuff, this is allot of TRASH!

Significant Clothing Findings included socks, a blouse and underwear….. yuk!  Significant Personal Hygiene Findings …… eww!!   We won’t even go there!

Here are the Stats.  Plastic pieces came in first  at 238 pieces, followed by cigarette butts at 166, followed closely by foam and glass pieces at 126 and 143, respectively.

All in all we had a really great day.  Many thanks to all of you for taking time out of your Saturday to help our community.

Grilling: A Time for Fun and Precaution

6/1/2017

Just when you thought it was safe to grab your apron (and a beer) and head outside to the BBQ, the NFPA has come up with some precautionary facts designed to make us a little more vigilant and careful when enjoying this traditional backyard adventure.
  • In 2014, 16,600 patients went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills.
  • July is the peak month for grill fires (17%), including structure, outdoor or unclassified fires.  Other high incident months include May, June and August.
  • Failure to clean the grill was the leading factor contributing to the fire in 1/5 of all grill structure fires (19%). In 17% of fires, something that could catch fire was too close to the grill.
  • Leaks or breaks were the leading factor in 11% of grill structure fires and 23% of outside and unclassified grill fires.
  • Gas grills contributed to a higher number of home fires overall than their charcoal counterparts.
