The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) recently amended two regulations that are meant to help manage highly hazardous chemicals. GI Part 91 “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals” was effective February 23, 2017 and OH Part 591 “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals” became effective last year on November 17, 2016. For the most part, the changes made to these regulations were administrative in nature, such as formatting changes and reference corrections. One of the most significant items of note about these regulations is that they adopt the federal regulation, 29 CFR 1910.119 Process Safety management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals, by reference. That means that if you are in compliance with the federal regulation, you are also in compliance with Michigan’s regulation.
